How I found mid-career growth in the U.S. Army Medical Department

Prior to joining the U.S. Army in 2003, I had read a considerable number of scientific publications on biomedical research projects that were submitted by the U.S. Army. At the time, I was very fascinated by the microbial pathogens they were studying and the impact their research may have on improving the welfare of the general public. However, despite how appealing their research was to me, I thought that a person had to be a "career" soldier (who normally starts young in their early 20"s) in order to become part of the team.
